HISTORY OF THE COLUMBIA RIVER HIGHWAY

The Columbia River Highway was the first scenic highway in USA. This highway was built between 1913 and 1922. This highway is in the state of Oregon and belongs to the route 30.

The Columbia River Highway is 196 miles long, from Astoria to The Dalles. Its cost was 11.000.000 $.

The engineer for the highway was Samuel C. Lancaster (1864-1941) and was promoted by Sam Hill and the engineer Samuel C. Lancaster. Sam Hill knew the Switzerland's Axenstrasse, a road built along Lake Lucerne. This Swiss road included a windowed tunnel, and Hill took the idea to build a similar highway through the Columbia River gorge.

Columbia River Highway Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places from 1983.

From 1984, it is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
