Rome had become the centre of a large tourism industry due to its historical importance. The city was able to support almost 750 photographers who made, at least, part of their living by selling views of the city to the visitors between 1840 and 1915.
One of those photographers, unknown, is the author of this album.
The date of this album is c.1890.
It seems as if "views photographers" were placing the tripod legs into the holes created by previous photographers at their favourites sites, fact that gives us a generic quality of this work.
Images of the ruins of the classical past were the first priority for views makers. This images were followed by views of ecclesiastical architecture and works of art.
